AppleTV’s Knife Edge: Chasing Michelin Stars returns for Season 2 with even more intensity, ambition, and culinary passion. Will and I had the pleasure of experiencing Season 1, and now we are back at the table for another journey into the demanding world of Michelin recognition. From the very first episode, the new season raises the stakes, showcasing chefs driven by determination, creativity, and an unwavering desire to reach for the stars.

A Michelin Star is among the most prestigious honors a restaurant can receive, awarded by the renowned Michelin Guide in recognition of exceptional culinary achievement. The stars are awarded to restaurants rather than individual chefs, with inspectors considering the quality of ingredients, mastery of cooking techniques, harmony of flavors, the personality expressed through the cuisine, and consistency over time. Restaurants can earn up to three stars, and maintaining that recognition requires continued excellence. One star signifies high-quality cooking that is “worth a stop,” two stars recognize exceptional cuisine “worth a detour,” and three stars represent the highest distinction—extraordinary cooking “worth a special journey.” In the world of fine dining, earning a star is difficult; keeping one can be even harder.

Before stepping into Season 2, it is worth remembering what made the first season of Knife Edge: Chasing Michelin Stars so compelling. The series introduced viewers to the intense, emotional, and often unforgiving pursuit of Michelin recognition, following restaurants and chefs as they worked to earn, defend, or reclaim one of the culinary world’s most prestigious honors. Chris & Will’s first look at the series explored restaurants including New York’s Coqodaq and Nōksu, along with Cariño in Chicago, each bringing a completely different personality, culinary vision, and level of pressure to the journey.

Season 1 showed that chasing a Michelin Star is about far more than creating a beautiful plate. Behind every dish are long hours, personal sacrifices, creative risks, and the constant uncertainty of knowing anonymous inspectors may be watching. It was that combination of breathtaking food and very human ambition that made the series so easy to become invested in—and Season 2 now has the opportunity to push that pursuit even further.

Season 2 moves at a noticeably faster pace and wastes very little time getting to the heart of the story. It showcases the hard work, emotion, dedication, kitchen drama, and relentless challenges that come with chasing Michelin recognition. The pressure feels immediate, and at its best, the series leaves viewers on the edge of their seats waiting to discover who will earn—or hold onto—that next coveted star.

At the same time, Season 2 left me questioning the pursuit itself. A Michelin Star may represent an extraordinary achievement for a restaurant, but is the experience always worth the cost? With increasingly expensive tasting menus and sometimes surprisingly small portions, there is an interesting conversation to be had about whether the prestige surrounding fine dining matches the experience for the average guest.

Season 2 official Trailer

While Will and I have enjoyed both seasons, I do wonder whether the series has enough momentum to continue evolving for several more. Season 2 occasionally begins to feel familiar, and that is where the show could benefit from expanding its perspective. I would love to see more interaction with actual diners, more emotional reactions from guests, and opinions from people across different financial backgrounds. Fine dining can mean something very different depending on who is sitting at the table, and bringing those perspectives into the series could add another important layer to the story.

There is still plenty to enjoy here, especially for viewers fascinated by the discipline, pressure, and ambition behind Michelin-level dining. But the start of Season 2 also left us wanting the series to dig deeper and offer something beyond the familiar chase for the next star.

Chris & Will give Season 2 of Knife Edge: Chasing Michelin Stars 7 out of 10 smiles.

The season remains engaging, but at times it begins to feel slightly stale. To keep the series fresh, the next chapter may need to look beyond the kitchen and explore more of the people actually paying to experience what those stars represent.
