Fall competition, unexpected chemistry, and a race unlike any other give Hallmark’s latest autumn romance a playful twist.

Feel the season with a twist on one of fall’s most unusual—and surprisingly satisfying—traditions. Who knew you could actually race pumpkins? And not just any race. Competitors hollow out enormous pumpkins, climb inside, and paddle their way across the water toward the finish line, often dressed in costume for a little extra seasonal fun. It is essentially a traditional regatta without the boats—just one very large pumpkin. Will and I had the pleasure of being introduced to this quirky autumn tradition while screening Hallmark Channel’s new fall film, Pumpkin Regatta Romance.
Pumpkin regattas may sound like something created specifically for a Hallmark movie, but this wonderfully unusual fall tradition is very real. Giant pumpkin growers began experimenting with turning their oversized gourds into floating vessels during the 1990s, with one of the earliest organized races taking place in Windsor, Nova Scotia, in 1999. From there, the idea spread across North America, with communities from New Hampshire and Maine to Oregon embracing the tradition. What began as a quirky extension of giant-pumpkin growing has since become one of autumn’s most entertaining and wonderfully strange traditions.
The film definitely introduced us to a tradition we never knew existed, but it also reminded us of something much more important: grudges can take up far too much space in life. When people refuse to move beyond old disagreements, they can end up wasting time instead of truly living it.
Pumpkin Regatta Romance follows Nadine, the daughter of a local boat shop owner, and Ethan, a pumpkin farmer, as they try to save a beloved fall tradition that has been caught in the middle of a long-standing family feud. With their fathers unwilling to move past their differences, Nadine and Ethan decide to work together in hopes of healing old wounds and bringing the town’s Pumpkin Regatta back to life.
Love, passion, and a little risk all come into play as Nadine and Ethan grow closer while working to revive the regatta. There is an undeniable connection between them, but the film keeps you wondering whether they are truly falling in love or simply being drawn together by a tradition that means so much to both of them.
Their efforts also become a test of trust. Rebuilding the event requires the cooperation of the entire town, and keeping those plans hidden from their fathers is no easy task. Still, the community comes together in an unexpected way, quietly helping Nadine and Ethan bring the Pumpkin Regatta back to life while protecting the surprise for as long as possible.
Overall, we thought Pumpkin Regatta Romance was a wonderful fall film and a truly relaxing experience. It introduced us to a tradition we had never seen before and somehow made the idea of climbing into a giant pumpkin and racing across the water feel like something we should immediately add to our own bucket list.
This is the kind of movie that feels made for a cool autumn evening—something to watch while sitting by the fire with a warm glass of apple cider and simply enjoying the season. The story is lighthearted, heartfelt, and filled with enough charm to make you want to escape into the small-town world Hallmark creates so well.
The script, production, performances, and visuals all worked together beautifully. The fall scenery and colorful regatta elements gave the film a warm seasonal atmosphere, while the cast brought enough personality and chemistry to keep the story engaging. We especially enjoyed how the film balanced romance with family history, community, and the importance of letting go of old grudges.
The movie does take a little time to find its rhythm, and the opening felt slower than we expected. Once the story begins to move, however, it becomes much more entertaining and easier to become invested in the characters and the fate of the Pumpkin Regatta.
For us, the biggest strength was simply how comforting the film felt. It does not try to be overly complicated or dramatic. Instead, it gives viewers a warm reminder that traditions can bring people together, but sometimes it takes forgiveness, risk, and a little courage to keep those traditions alive.

It earned points for its unique premise, beautiful fall atmosphere, and heartfelt story, but the slower pacing kept it from reaching the very top of our list.
