From mountain-town charm to city discoveries, Chris & Will explore the sights, stories, flavors, and experiences that make East Tennessee unforgettable in the fall.

Recently, my team and I had the opportunity to explore several destinations across East Tennessee, including places we had never experienced before. Our goal was simple: discover what visitors can truly expect when traveling through the region during the fall. Think of this as our own guide to what to see, where to go, and what makes an autumn trip through East Tennessee worth the journey.
Our first stop took us to Sevierville for Impossibilities: Magic, Mindreading and Mayhem. This attraction earned an impressive 10 out of 10 smiles from Will and me. The hour-long evening production was fun, mysterious, interactive, and well worth making time for during a visit to the area. Later that same day, we stopped at Three Bears General Store in Pigeon Forge, a large two-story tourist shop featuring everything from souvenirs and Christmas decorations to snacks, homemade fudge, ice cream, and a live bear enclosure. The store certainly offers plenty to look at, although at times the sheer amount of merchandise can feel overwhelming. We found ourselves most interested in the holiday ornaments, sale items, and decorative pieces, while much of the remaining inventory felt similar to what you might expect from a traditional tourist stop. We also sampled the vanilla-and-chocolate swirl ice cream, along with chocolate and chocolate-walnut fudge. The treats satisfied our craving for something sweet, although the fudge was not among the best, we have tried during our travels.
The bear enclosure was a pleasant addition, but for us it did not become the standout attraction we expected. One issue that did affect the visit was a noticeable restroom odor that carried into parts of the store and could certainly use improvement. The staff was generally friendly, although frequent radio communication and what sounded like complaints about members of their team created an occasional distraction during the visit. Overall, Three Bears General Store is a classic Pigeon Forge tourist stop with plenty of souvenirs, snacks, and seasonal items, but it did not feel particularly unique to our fall experience.

Connected to the general store is the Pigeon Forge Gem Mine, and this stop turned out to be one of the most relaxing experiences of the day. Depending on the package you purchase, you receive a bucket filled with sand and begin searching for hidden treasures such as minerals, shells, coins, and even shark teeth in a flowing water trail. The experience feels a little like playing in the sand as a kid, only this time you never know what you might uncover. It is simple, calming, and surprisingly enjoyable—and best of all, it is not nearly as messy as you might expect. Whatever you discover is yours to keep, and there are even options to turn certain finds into jewelry. The shop itself also impressed us, offering merchandise that felt less like traditional tourist souvenirs and more like unique decorative pieces and items you could actually use at home.
There may not be a specific fall theme attached to the experience, but it offers something equally valuable during a busy travel day: a chance to slow down, relax, and enjoy the moment. Sometimes the best stops are the ones that do not demand too much from you.

The following evening, we wrapped up our night with a visit to Sky Pirates of Mermaid Bay. From the outside, the attraction immediately catches your attention. The themed exterior is colorful, playful, and overlooks parts of the city, so naturally we were excited. The idea of a pirate-and-mermaid-themed miniature golf experience sounded like an easy yes. Unfortunately, the experience did not live up to the presentation. Will and I enjoy miniature golf, especially courses that include interactive elements, creative challenges, and a sense of discovery from hole to hole. Here, much of the course felt more like a traditional tourist-area attraction, with a design that came across as somewhat plastic and repetitive rather than immersive.
The service also affected our experience. We arrived around 8:30 p.m., approximately 30 minutes before the posted closing time, but it already felt as though the venue was preparing to shut down for the evening. Both restrooms were closed for cleaning at the same time, some golf options and other offerings had already closed, and we felt closely monitored as we made our way through the final holes. If a business advertises a 9 p.m. closing time, we believe guests arriving before then should still be able to enjoy the experience without feeling rushed. The exterior certainly creates excitement, but for us, the attraction itself never matched that first impression. Between the limited experience, early closures, and an overall sense that the evening was winding down before we had finished, this stop became one of the more disappointing parts of our trip.

It may appeal to visitors looking for a traditional miniature golf stop, but for us, it lacked the magic, interaction, and welcoming atmosphere we had hoped to find during our fall travels.
