After Dark at Blowing Cave Mill: Chris & Will’s First Paranormal Investigation

An invitation into one of East Tennessee’s historic mills became a night of questions, unexplained voices, and a first paranormal investigation Chris & Will will not soon forget.

History can change after dark. During the daytime, an old building can be appreciated for its architecture, stories, and the generations of people who once moved through it. But when the doors close, the lights disappear, and those same rooms become quiet, history can suddenly feel much closer. That was the experience waiting for us at Blowing Cave Mill.

Will and I were invited to participate in what became both our first formal paranormal investigation and, for the mill, a first experience of its kind. We were already interested in the property because of its long history, with roots reaching back to the 1800s and generations of stories attached to the building. But neither of us knew exactly what to expect once night arrived.

Our September investigation began around 8:30 p.m. and continued until shortly after 11:30 p.m. Joining Will and me were members of our team, Loretta and Jessica, along with Tim Sides, who led the investigation and helped explain the equipment, techniques, and process used throughout the evening. For us, that education was important.

I have always been somewhere between belief and skepticism when it comes to the paranormal. I am interested in experiences that cannot immediately be explained, but I have never wanted theatrical effects or assumptions to replace genuine investigation. Will has generally been more willing to believe that something may exist beyond what we understand, although he would usually prefer not to go looking for it. This time, we went looking.

As we moved throughout the building, there were moments when it simply felt as though we were not alone. At times there was the sensation of being watched, accompanied by a tightness in the chest that made certain areas noticeably more uncomfortable than others. The strongest reaction came around the post office area of the mill. Nothing dramatic needed to happen there for the room to feel different. The atmosphere itself was enough to make us pay closer attention. And that became one of the most important lessons of the night: a paranormal investigation is not necessarily a continuous series of frightening moments.

Some of the most interesting moments from our investigation did not reveal themselves until afterward. While reviewing the audio and video collected during the night, we began hearing sounds we did not remember hearing while we were inside the mill. There appeared to be the sound of furniture moving. Then came voices. Among the recordings were sounds that both of us interpreted as words including “Why,” “No,” and “Stay.” That does not automatically make those recordings paranormal.

Throughout the review process, we tried to determine whether the sounds could be traced back to someone else in the building, outside noise, equipment interference, or another ordinary explanation. We accounted for the people who were present, checked the areas involved, compared what we were hearing, and dismissed things we could not confidently verify. That process mattered just as much as finding something unusual. If every unexplained sound becomes a ghost, there is no investigation.

For us, the more interesting question was what remained after the obvious possibilities had been considered. And one recording still stays with me. “Stay” Of everything captured that evening, the voice that appeared to say “Stay” remains the most difficult for me to dismiss. It sounded close.

What made it more unsettling was remembering how I had felt in that area during the investigation, the sensation that someone or something was watching me. We did not know at the time that the recording contained anything unusual. There was no dramatic reaction in the moment and no expectation that we had captured something. We discovered it later. That made the recording more interesting to us because we were not reacting to a sound we expected to hear. We were simply reviewing what had been recorded and found something we could not immediately explain.

Is it proof of a ghost? We cannot say that. But we also cannot currently tell you exactly what produced it. There is a difference between those two statements, and that difference is where this experience became fascinating.

Neither Will nor I walked into Blowing Cave Mill expecting one night to prove the existence of the paranormal. We left, however, more open to the possibility that there are experiences we may not always be able to explain immediately.

The investigation made the subject more believable for us, not because we wanted to believe everything we heard, but because we experienced the process ourselves. We were there. We knew who was in the building. We knew what we heard during the night and, just as importantly, what we did not hear until reviewing the recordings later. We also left with a greater appreciation for the history of Blowing Cave Mill.

The paranormal element may have brought us through the doors after dark, but learning about the property and the people connected to it became equally important. Historic buildings carry stories whether or not someone believes those stories continue beyond a lifetime. Would we investigate Blowing Cave Mill again? Absolutely.

Our first paranormal investigation did not give us a simple answer about whether ghosts exist or whether Blowing Cave Mill is haunted. Instead, it gave us something more interesting. A historic building. A dark September night. Several recordings we could explain. A few we could not. And one quiet voice that still seems to ask us not to leave. “Stay.”
